• Diesel power plant: Introduction – IC Engines,
types, construction– Plant layout with
auxiliaries – fuel supply system, air starting
equipment, lubrication and cooling system –
super charging.
, Diesel power plant-Field of use
• Diesel power plants may be in the range of 2 to 150 MW
Capacity.
• 1. Central stations- this can be used as Central stations
where capacity required is small or medium, small towns
or industries located in remote areas or other specific
reason.
• 2.peak load plants diesel plants are used in combination
with thermal, hydro plants as peak load plants, sometimes
they used at power grids to supply peak load because they
can be easily started or stopped at a short notice.
, Diesel power plant-Field of use
• 3.Mobile plants- mobile diesel plants mounted on trailers
can be used for temporary or emergency purpose supplying
power to large Engineering works (construction of dams
etc.)
• 4. Emergency plants or stand by units- where power
interruption would mean financial loss (for heavy industries
etc ) and other areas are tunnel lighting, underground
mining lighting and ventilation and hospitals (human life).
• 5. Starting stations: the diesel units are used to run the
auxiliaries for starting the large steam power plants or any
other power plants.
, • IC engines convert chemical energy stored in
their fuels into heat energy during the burning
part of the operation, the heat energy is
converted into mechanical energy by the
expansion of gases against piston attached to
crank shaft that can rotate.
