Principles of working of closed and open cycle
gas turbines. Combined Cycle Power Plants
and comparison
, Gas Turbine Power Plant
• GAS TURBINE Invented in 1930 by Frank Whittle
• Patented in 1934
• First used for aircraft propulsion in 1942 on Me262 by
Germans during second world war
• Manufacturers: General Electric, Pratt &Whitney,
SNECMA, Rolls Royce, Honeywell, Siemens –
Westinghouse, Alstom, BHEL.
, Applications of gas turbine
• Power generation (simple and combined-cycle operation)
• Cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power, CHP- heat may
used for district heating or in process industry)
• Aviation
• Marine
• Mechanical drive (to drive compressors pumps or fans etc.)
• They are not suitable for automobiles because of their very
high speeds.
• All gas turbine power plants are using the open cycle gas
turbine principle
• Fuels for gas turbines – gases or liquids (natural gas, etc),
Waste to power (coal mine, gas steel gas )
, Gas Turbine Power Plant
• CLASSIFICATION OF GAS TURBINES
• 1. open cycle gas turbine.
• 2. closed cycle gas turbine .
open cycle gas turbine.
