SYLLABUS-
Nuclear power plant: Nuclear fuel – breeding
and fertile materials –reactor operation-types of
reactors-Pressurized water reactor, Boiling water
reactor, sodium-graphite reactor, fast breeder
Reactor, Homogeneous Reactor, Gas cooled
Reactor-Radiation hazards and shielding –
radioactive waste disposal.
, Source of heat
• Coal, gas, liquid, waste(sugar cane, etc.) – steam
power plant
• Nuclear fission – nuclear power plant
• Nuclear fusion- stars including sun
,• As on March 2020, 6780 MW of power is generating from
nuclear power plants in India.
• Nuclear reactions of importance in energy production are
fusion, fission and radioactivity.
• In fusion, two are more lighter nuclei (plural of nucleus) to
form a heavier nucleus.
• In fission, a heavy nucleus is split into two or more lighter
nuclei.
• In both (fission ,fusion) there is a a decrease in mass
resulting in exothermic energy (exothermic means that
releases energy in the form of heat).
• Energy is produced in the sun and stars by continuous fusion
reactions at very high temperatures and enormous
gravitational pressures.
