Involuntary Admission
Laws within every state dictate the involuntary admission process of persons
who may be a threat to themselves or others. The police can admit a person
as long as they are a threat to themselves or other. They can only hold you
against your will for 96 hours until a judge can review the case. The
psychiatrist will admit the person but, has 96 hours to determine if they can
go or not. He has 96 hours to go to the judge. Weekends and holidays don’t
include the 96 hours. If the patient say’s fine then they can sign themselves
into the hospital voluntary. The must have the mental capability to sign
themselves in. If a patient signs themselves in because they are depressed
and want to go then the doctor has 12 hours once the patient say’s they want
to leave before they can go. They can say if they can go or not. The facility
has 24 hours to discharge the patient if he or she no longer meets involuntary
criteria or the patient may rescind the request for discharge or the Petition
for Involuntary Placement must be initiated if the patient meets involuntary
criteria. Hurt themselves or someone else are the criteria to get locked into
the psych ward. It’s illegal to hold someone against their will.
Meds- they can refuse meds! Only if they are a danger to themselves or if
the judge say then YES they get meds. They can refuse meds.

admissions to the mental health facility.
A patient may be psychotic but not harmful to self or others and in this
situation would not meet criteria for involuntary placement.
A person cannot be medicated if he or she refuses. In this case,
medications can only be given by an emergency treatment order.
The 72 hours is held in stay when the patient is transferred to a medical
facility and resumes ticking when the patient returns to the psychiatric
facility.
, If it is deemed that a patient lacks the capacity to make healthcare
decisions, a healthcare surrogate or proxy may be named temporarily until a
hearing and a guardian advocate is appointed.

Moderate- is less alert to events in environment, decrease ability to concentrate &
decrease attention span, and need some assistance with problem solving. Obvious
muscular tension & restlessness Ex. Would be ego defenses are used in moderate
stage of anxiety.
Anxiety at the moderate to severe level that remains unresolved over an
extended period of time can contribute to a number of physiological
disorders such as migraine headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and cardiac
arrhythmias.
