Tips
● Prep time: 10-12 minutes spent
● Do not repeat yourself or repeat points
● Keep linking back to your thesis + guiding question (make it strong and clear!!)
● Remember to cite line numbers if there! For ex. “...” (line 12)
● Define the text type in your introduction.
○ “Through the use of…” as a starting sentence for thesis
● Good topic sentences are built around a stylistic feature.
● There is no need to impress examiners with specific stylistic devices, as long as
your examples support your thesis.
Excerpt of Writing
● Possible forms of text types include excerpts from books, letters, emails,
articles, etc.
● Things to focus on;
○ Offer ample illustrations/proofs to back up your point.
○ Return to the author’s purpose and/or audience throughout your analysis
(depending on the guiding question).
○ Pronoun usage, verb tenses, tone, language/syntax, pathos and ethos,
alliteration, typography if applicable.
○ !! EXAMPLES !! USE LOTS !!
○ Think of answering “What is the effect of language on the reader?” at the
end of each paragraph.

● Discuss organization of the webpage, where are features placed, specific
colouring, backgrounds, and what effect this has on the viewer.
● Discuss success factors, readability, motivation, text, features of the web page
(search tool, sharing functions, logos, panels, symbols, illustrations, etc.) ->
what do these suggest about the webpage.
