States.
Craniosynostosis
Early closure of sutures. Elongated head, with early closure of the saggital sutures and
coronal sutures. Head, face, and orbits are altered
Hydrocephalus
Enlargement of the head caused by inadequate drainage of cerebral spinal fluid
Myxedema
Severe form of hypothyroidism causing thickening of facial features.
Cushing's Syndrome
Increased adrenal hormone production causing a rounded moon face, ruddy cheeks,
prominent jowls, and excess facial hair.
Hyperthyroidism
Excessive production of thyroid hormones. Hyperthyroidism results in enlargement of the
gland, exophthalmos (bulging eyes), fine hair, weight loss, and diarrhea. Possible symptoms:
,Irritability/nervousness
Muscle weakness or tremors
Amenorrhea
Weight loss
Insomnia
Enlarged thyroid
Heat sensitivity
Visual disturbances
Tachycardia
Graves' Disease
The most common type of hyperthyroidism. No known cause.
Goiter
Enlargement of the thyroid gland. May be caused by lack of iodine in diet. Prevalent in Asian
and African cultures.
Entropion
Inversion of the eyelid and lashes caused by muscle spasm of the eyelid. Friction from lashes
can cause corneal irritation
Ectropion
Eversion of the lower eyelid caused by muscle weakness.
Acromegaly
Enlargement of the bones, facial features, hands, and feet due to increased growth hormones.
Torticollis
Aka (wry neck), is a spasm of the muscles supplied by the spinal accessory nerve, causing
lateral flexion contracture of the cervical spine musculature.
,
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Parkinson's Disease
"Flat effect". A mask-like expression due to a result of a decrease in dopamine
Bell's Palsy

period of remission during which no headaches occur. Onset is sudden and may be associated
with alcohol consumption, stress, or emotional distress.
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
, An autoimmune disease that results in primary hypothyroidism. Occurs most frequently in
females and tends to be familial.
Blepharitis
Inflammation of the eyelids. Due to staphylococcal infection.
Hypothyroidism
Decrease in production of thyroid hormones. Results in lowered basal metabolism. Occurs
most frequently in females between the ages of 30 and 50. Symptoms:
Fatigue
Weakness
Weight Gain
Constipation
Memory impairment
Intolerance to cold
Depression
Bradycardia
Brain Attack
Aka stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), can result in neurologic deficits that include
facial paralysis.
Goiter
An enlargement of the thyroid gland, which may be caused by increased (hyper) or decreased
(hypo) thyroid function
Macular Degeneration
Age related, it is a degenerative condition of the macula, the central retina. Central vision is
lost gradually while peripheral vision remains intact.
Astigmatism
