Non Stress Test (NST)

-picks up contractions and fetal heart rate

-TOCO for contractions

-External fetal monitor for fetal heart rate




Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)

-measure pockets of amniotic fluid with an ultrasound

-AF is made by the baby's kidneys every few hours, so shows how baby is doing




What is the purpose of amniotic fluid?

Warm sac around the baby for temperature control, shock protection, nutrition, baby waste
into amniotic fluid, and helps them float so they develop symmetrically

(Warmth, cushion, protection)

,Normal range of amniotic fluid:

8-18




Low AFI:

Oligohydramnios

AFI <5-6




High AFI:

Hydramnios or Polyhydramnios

AFI>18-22




Biophysical Profile (BPP):

-Done with ultrasound and fetal monitors

-Give 2 or 0 pts for each. 10 pts total

1. fetal breathing movements

2. gross body movements

3. fetal tone

4. reactive fetal heart rate (NST)

5. qualitative amniotic fluid volume

BPP of 6 or lower:

This doesn't look good so we should think about delivery
