He is experiencing a sickle cell crisis. He is hospitalized for this crisis. At this time he is experiencing acute kidney injury from the sickle cell crisis. These drug are known to induce AKI the kidney suffers because of complications of sickling of RBCs in the blood vessels. The complications of sickle cell can lead to loss of function with the kidney.
