LESSON 1 – Grade R: Home Language Teaching – storytelling
In Grade R, perceptual work is extremely important because it underpins and
prepares the foundations for future learning (DBE CAPS 2012).
(i) Plan a lesson that you will teach in a Grade R class while sitting at the
carpet area to develop the learners’ listening and speaking skills.
(ii) Use two resources that you have created or that are available in the
environment to enhance the learners’ learning.
(iii) Take two pictures of the resources that you will use and attach them to your
workbook as evidence.
(iv) Use the template provided at the end of this tutorial letter to write your lesson
plan

LESSON PRESENTATION
Introduction of • Start by giving learners a short history of fables and
lesson oral traditions.
• Read the fable example out loud to the learners.
• Select a book that is not too challenging for the
learners at beginning levels but not too boring for the
more advanced learners.
1. Throughout the course of the reading, stop and ask
questions such as:
• What do you think will happen next?
• What is this character like?
• Can you tell what happened so far in the story?
2. These questions serve to introduce learners to the art of
storytelling and the important aspects of listening and
read
