TOPIC 2- NUTRITIONAL AND DIETARY NEEDS OF DIFFERENT GROUPS OF
PEOPLE
Babies
- Needs essential nutrients for growth and development.
- Require energy dense and filling foods easy to swallow.
- Food must be hygienic and safe.
- Drink on milk but weaned on to solid food.
- Parents want food to be nutritious, appetising, easy to prepare, without
additives and low in sugar.
Toddlers/pre-school children
- Growing fast so require lot of energy.
- Need balanced diet with high proportion of complex carbohydrates to provide
energy (found in whole grains and veg).
- 5 portions of starchy food.
- 5 portions of fruit and veg.
- 3 portions of dairy food.
- 2-3 portions of proteins.
- Food must be easy to hold, suitably sized portions and interesting
shapes/colours/textures, flavours.
School aged children
- Influenced by media and peer group.
- Need food that meet current dietary guidelines while providing filling food.
- Should eat varied balanced diet based on Eatwell guide.
- Should exercise to have a healthy body weight.
Adolescents
- Becoming aware of moral, economic and health issues.
- Aware of peer group pressure and body image.
- Body growth is rapid so lots of energy required (boys for growth spurt).
- Girls need more iron to replace blood lost during menstruation.
- Puberty is when bones stop growing and without enough calcium and
phosphorus, weakening of bones can occur, leading to ricket and
osteoporosis.
- Food to be affordable, fashionable, quick and suited to energetic lifestyle.
