According to Vrey (1979) motivation is a type of arousal that is driven by the internal factors such as; the person himself/herself or by external factors such as someone else. This is dependent on the realisation of a specific goal or a set of goals. Motivation is a process “that influences the direction, persistence, and vigour of goal-directed behaviour (Passer & Smith 2001). Which, in simpler terms states that motivation is a type of psychological arousal that drives and controls one’s behaviour in accordance to that specific goal. According to Mwamwenda (2004) motivation is a concept behind our ability to explain or rationalise directed behaviour; to do with both humans and other organisms. Motivation refers to all the subconscious anomalies that are responsible for “driv[ing] an individual to action” (Gouws 2015:217). Motivation consists of two components; movement and purpose. Movement explains the action behind the intention and purpose refers to the route an individual may take to be able to achieve their goal (Gouws 2015:217)
