Primary Care Application
Primary care describes any form of care delivered by physicians, physician assistants, nurse
practitioners, and advanced practice professionals. This type of health care is widely used and can
be seen as health care for people making an initial approach to a doctor or nurse for treatment.
The focus of primary care is to decrease the utilization of specialty providers. Primary care clinics
can include individual physician practice or multiple physician practice and are either a non-profit
or a for-profit facility. Generally, these clinics see many patients a day. For example, the local for a
for-profit, multiple-physician community clinic receives about 50 patients a day. This clinic is
owned by physicians that specialize in women’s health, internal medicine, orthopedics, pediatrics
and oncology. As the administrator for this office, it is important to address all the needs of the
organization for the best quality care to be given to the patient. This clinic recently laid-off one of
the office receptionist leading to increased workload and less patient satisfaction. The
administrator of this clinic needs to examine all the options and determine the one that best fits the
organizations needs and the patient’s needs.
With the recent organizational change, it has been difficult for the one receptionist to
process the heavy workload. With the increased flow of patients, and long wait times many
complaints have been received. One specific patient was not able to be seen at the clinic and
developed an infection that requires surgery. As the administrator of this clinic it would be best for
the organization to hire another receptionist. Due to increased labor cost, hiring someone part-
