Organizational charts are utilized in many healthcare organizations. Share one advantage and one
disadvantage of their use. As the nurse leader for your healthcare organization, would you utilize
organizational charts? Why or why not? Share your rationale. How could the nurse leader utilize an
organizational chart to enhance collaboration between departments through reflexivity (one of the
person-centred leader attributes)?
Good evening Dr. and class,
An organizational chart is utilized in many healthcare organizations as a tool that identifies the
relationship of structure inside that organization. Management plays an important role in
developing the organizational structure using the chart as a tool that allow delegation of tasks to
appropriate staff or departments aimed at achieving a common goal (Marquis, 2017).
There are advantages and disadvantages of the organizational chart. The organizational chart
promotes patient flow, care tasks involved, and utilizes both clinical and non-clinical staff. One
advantage is promotes using authority to better identify staff roles and expectations which in turn
promotes accountability. A disadvantage is keeping up with the constant changes in patient care
and nursing practice can be challenging (Kennedy, & Froeschl, 2018).
As a nurse leader, the organizational charts can be beneficial to help develop outlines for
problem solving that can define responsibilities and expectations of each team or member within
the organization. This in turn promotes teamwork, collaboration and communication within the
organization (Marquis, 2017). This is necessary in the implementation of change or clinical
problem solving. The Nurse Leader plays an important role in identifying and solving issues
identified and ensuring quality outcomes. Without clearly identified responsibilities and expected
outcomes that can be addressed on the clinical chart, transition can be challenging and put the
ability to reach and maintain higher health‐care quality standards by the team at risk. Without
practice clarity, the ability to articulate, implement and measure clinical and quality outcomes is
difficult for the Nurse leader (Bender, 2016).
