NR 394 Week 1 Discussion: Diversity in Nursing (Graded)

Discuss what transcultural nursing means to you.
Transcultural nursing to me is understanding patients’ values and lifestyle. Respecting their
beliefs and wants in life. Madeline M Maier-Lorentz states that Transcultural nursing is an
essential aspect of healthcare today. “This requires nurses to recognize and appreciate cultural
differences in healthcare values, beliefs, and customs. Nurses must acquire the necessary
knowledge and skills in cultural competency.” (MM;, Transcultural nursing: Its importance in
nursing practice)
Why did you decide to take this course?
This class was a required class to take in my RN-BSN program. After reading the description of
this class I can tell this class will be a good class to expand my understanding of patients. This
class will teach me the appropriate way to function and help my patients.
Explain what you would like to learn in the next 8 weeks.
I hope to learn more knowledge of culturally appropriate communication. I want to be able to
learn how to understand others culture . I want to be able to take care of my patients based on
their culture. “All people deserve respect by the health care team regardless of financial status,
education level, religion, gender, race, or ethnicity” (Andrews 2020).
How do you hope this course will help you in your clinical?
I hope this cause will show me and lead me to the most appropriate and culturally sensitive way
possible. I hope to learn more positive communication to have with my patients. I want to dive
into different cultures and what they believe to be the best in their culture and learn how to adapt
that into my own life.
