MAT113 Class Notes
I. INTRODUCTION TO THE MATERIALS FOR INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
( NOTES)
(this is a dried patola fiber)
Materials play an essential role in the design process.
One of the major considerations in product development.
Determines the quality of a product as well as its market cost.
Having the knowledge of the different material characteristics as well as
its possibilities enable designers to choose the best one to use to come
up with excellent designs.
“Knowing the material characteristics, as well as its properties allows
the designer to select the best material to use in his/her design which
would best suit to the product’s intended function.”- Del Curto (2018)
Having the knowledge…
discover and overcome the materials’ limits and constraints.
Ensure high manufacturing yields, good quality, and good reliability
(Pfeifer,n.d)
Good Material
design Knowledge
GOOD OUTPUT
, The Design Formula
A good design with the right material choice results to good output.
How do we choose the right material for our designs?
II. MATERIAL SELECTION CONSIDERATIONS (NOTES)
1. The Requirements
Must meet the technical requirements of the design in establishing the
functionality, safety, and cost (Ashby, M.F., Johnson, K., 2008)
image from the given lecture notes
The figure shows the vital factors to be considered in designing a product-
functionality, usability and satisfaction.
Bottom part- technical design where in functionality is taken into account
Upper Part- industrial design includes the usability and satisfaction of end-
users. Must be given emphasis in the material selection during the design
process.
