The facilitator posts within the first 24 hours of the week to start the discussion. To promote thoughtful dialogue, you should respond as soon as able after the facilitator has posted. Review the discussion rubric for further guidelines on grading. Part 1: Individual Describe your organization as a closed or open system. Discuss how thinking differs between the two. Is there a difference in systems thinking in traditional healthcare versus complex adaptive systems? Part 2: With Your Group Systems thinking allows a more holistic perspective on decision making. Share examples of the types of decisions that occur at the unit, department, and organizational levels of the organization. Describe the impact of those decisions vertically, horizontally, and system-wide. Part 1: Individual
Describe your organization as a closed or open system. Discuss how thinking differs
between the two. Is there a difference in systems thinking in traditional healthcare versus
complex adaptive systems?
My current organization is a value-based organization, as its main pay factors are driven
by patient satisfaction and quality outcomes. It is a divisional-based organization. It is a vast
healthcare system with multiple facilities, inpatient, outpatient, and urgent care facilities, placing
it in the open healthcare system category. The organization's thinking system, structured in
shared governance, gets input from its team members on what makes them want to work at the
organization and what corporate and executives do to improve work-life balance and make this a
great place to work. The system is a complex adaptive system (CAS), as management and nurse
leaders' roles must engage staff in the organization and departments' improvements. Johnson et
al. 2018 define complexity as the condition that multiple uncommon pieces intertwined or
connected to each other in complicated, often non-linear exchanges that are hard to comprehend
more thoroughly. My organization functions on many internal and external forces that influence
its success.
Johnson, 2019 shared K.L. von Bertanlanffy 1950 essential role of General System Theory GST
as this new system's movement believing that there are merging framework as its foundation.
GST was created on open networks of biological organisms that can reproduce as they
intermingle with their surroundings.
Traditional thinking in healthcare was treating a patient for a specific disease and not treating
patients differently based on the different symptoms. CAS thinking is encouraging and testing
new ways of doing things, finding new evidence-based processes that are safe and effective, and
