C768 Technical Communication Task 1
Main Scenario for All 3 Tasks:
You have recently been hired and your new manager informs you the organization
(e.g., business, company, educational institution, etc..) values innovation. You’re asked to write a white
paper (Task 1) on an emerging technology, practice or process (a.k.a. topic) relating to your WGU IT
degree. The white paper is intended for your supervisor. You will also create related documents for the
following audiences: an executive summary for the organizations’ leadership, a press release and an
FAQ (Task 2) for company-wide distribution. Finally, you’ll write an email inviting your department
colleagues with similar technical knowledge to a presentation on your topic. As a follow up, you also
record a multimedia presentation (Task 3) on the topic. Note: Bolded items are those that you must
create.
The following identifies what you must complete for Task 1. You’ll create this as one document with the
following sections:
A. Describe your organization including the following information:
1. Products or services your organization produces
2. The size of your organization, location, and additional sites (if appropriate)
3. The industry of which your organization is a part
B. Identify the topic of your white paper and review at least three (3) publicly accessible sources written
about it within the past five years. These sources may include interviews, white papers, research
studies or other types of work by industry professionals. For each, write a summary that includes the
title of the work, a discussion of the main topics and an explanation of why the information is
important.
C. Using the course’s Learning Resource as a guide, create a white paper about your topic. It should be
written as an informative document for your supervisor. The white paper should be 2-3 pages long
and must include the following:
1. A thorough explanation of your chosen topic based on your research
2. A compelling argument discussing how your topic could benefit your organization
D. Explain why your writing style (diction) in the white paper is appropriate for a supervisor audience.
E. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased
or summarized. This should include the three sources in Section B. APA formatting is highly
recommended.
F. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.
Note: Task 1 must pass evaluation before submitting Task 2.
