, 3.2 AN AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
1. DECOLONISATION:
Decolonisation is moving away from “western” ideas and going back to our African roots. It
is a way of reclaiming our uniqueness and ethnicity, which is very important for young
people to understand and consider.
2. AFRICAN COMMUNALISM:
The way in which rural areas in Africa have been functioning. This is a way of life for some
African people and they mindset will not change.
3. UBUNTU:
In education ubuntu means the connection of humanity as a whole. Mutual benefits and
independency form between people and their community through Ubuntu. Ubuntu acts a
one of the fundamental factors of foundation in education.
4. AFRICANISATION:
Is the process in whereby interpretation and the defining of the African culture and identity
happens. It gives a sense of belonging through cultural familiarity in the classroom.
5. INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE:
This is knowledge passed down over the years from generation to generation, this includes
things like myths, traditions , folktales and cultural practices.

1. What does teaching mean to you?
Teaching means having the opportunity, skills and abilities to educate and fill young minds
with knowledge that will help equip them with the skills they need to become professional
individuals one day.
2. How would you best describe teaching and what it involves?
Teaching is when an individual is trained with the proper skills and abilities and provided
with the correct resources and support to educate learners with content that is learnt
through interacting, experience and continuous practice and assessment.
3. How do you see your role as a teacher?
To help the minds of learners thrive in everyday problem-solving , educating them about our
heritage ,history and science and how to cope in the modern world, teaching learners about
