Prof. Card & class,
,It is important for nurses to be aware of changes in healthcare policy because nurses have individual
responsibility & accountability for maintaining professional competence. Nurses have legal & ethical
responsibilities as specified in the nurses scope & st&ard of practice, & state regulatory board (ANA
2010). Example of healthcare policy that protects patient safety is hospital-acquired conditions such
as fall, mechanical restraint related injuries, infections caused by the use of indwelling catheters,
pressure ulcers, medication error, infectious diarrhea & multiple drug resistant infections etc. The
CMS announced that it will no longer reimburse health providers for hospital acquired infection &
injuries.

Hi Professor Card & class,
As nurses we work within a "policy" or a code of ethics. Nurses promote, advocate, & protect patient
safety & rights. In an effort to comply with our ethical duties, we must be aware of healthcare
policies. How will we know what has changed & what the latest evidence supports if we are unaware
of what the policy is currently? With many changes implemented due to the ACA laws, we as nurses
must be aware of the laws in an effort not to commit a tort unintentionally, with a possible
consequence of being sanctioned for pure ignorance. If we as nurses perform & provide
nonmaleficence this may be done by knowing the healthcare policies.
As we know nonmaleficence means "to do no harm" If we are ignorant to healthcare policies we are
committing this ethical principle & legally this may be considered as a tort depending on the policy
that is broken. Beneficence is the act of doing what has to be done for the benefit of others. Knowing
our healthcare policies as nurses is practicing this ethical principle. This leads me to a new policy that
has been implemented within my organization. HEDIS gaps must be addressed in our notes to satisfy
NCQA. The seasoned nurses who have been apart of the company for several years are unclear as to
why we must "change" our policy regarding documentation. These nurses have comments regularly
as to why this policy just doesn't make sense. This is what provides EBP & shows that we as nurses
are attempting to have our members underst& what services they should be looking for from their
provider visits & it engages provider-patient interactions. This documentation raised our scores &
allowed our company to grow. The evidence is clear. However, sometimes for some nurses changes in
policies are difficult to accept.

, Professor & class,
The IOM has initiated several safety goals including 5 million lives initiative. Nurses must remain
diligent on patient safety & cost effective care to help decrease costs. Patients have access to
healthcare with Obama Care & are able to access health care, bringing more patients to clinics &
facilities, having knowledge of EBP to ensure patients are receiving effective, safe & cost efficient
care is important to the system in order to keep the movement of patients. Also nurses need to get
educated on natural disasters & bio terrorism. The recent scare of Ebola left many emergency
departments scrambling to get up to date on how to treat patients effectively without causing harm
to patients & their families.

Dr. Card & classmates,
The healthcare policy has affected healthcare facilities, staff & provides alike. The reimbursement is
an area that has been greatly focused on at the facility I work for. I am sure all healthcare facilities,
for reasons of self preservation, have kept close tabs on reimbursement. An area I have been
involved with is with that of status patients are placed in when being admitted from the ER. A status
of Observation or Inpatient is required when a patient is being admitted to the hospital. With an
observation status order it is the anticipation the patient will not stay longer than one midnight.
With an inpatient status order it is the anticipation the patient will need to stay at least 2 midnight's.
