Date: October 17, 2020
Unit: Cell Cycle Chapter: 12 Topic: Cell Reproduction Section: 12.4 Meiosis
Learning Goal:
o Describe the process of meiosis, including independent assortment and crossing
over.
o Explain how reduction division results in the formation of haploid gametes or
spores.
o SC.912.L.16.17: Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis and relate to the
processes of sexual and asexual reproduction and their consequences for genetic
variation. (H)
Think About It
As geneticists in the early 1900s applied Mendel’s laws, they wondered where
genes might be located. They expected genes to be carried on structures inside
the cell, but which structures? What cellular processes could account for
segregation and independent assortment, as Mendel had described?
