Chapter 13
1. Stanley finds something. What is it? (p. 60/61)
he finds a gold tube, open at one end and closed at the other end and it has a heart with the
letters K and B inside of it
2. At first Stanley tries to find a way not to give it to X-Ray, but Zigzag saw that he had found
something. What does Stanley suggest to X-Ray? (p. 62)
to wait for the next day to show it to Mom (since xrays hole is almost finished)
3. What happens when they get “in line” for the water? (p. 63)
Stanley moves up 1 place in line
Chapter 14
Stanley feels sorry that he had to give the tube to X-Ray “for once in his unlucky life he was in the
right place at the right time, and still it didn’t help him” (p. 64)
When the water truck is about to leave that morning X-Ray pretends to find the gold tube. Mr
Pendanski thinks the Warden will be interested.
Describe the Warden (p. 66 - 68)
she is tall and has red hair and freckles, she wears a black cowboy -hat & boots studded with
turquoise stones. she wears a dark red nail polish and she has rolled up sleeves
Chapter 15
1. The Warden seems to know a lot about the boys; for example their nicknames and also the fact
that Zero is the fastest digger. What explanation do the boys have for this? (p. 71)
She watches them 24/7 and has hidden cameras and microphones
2. The Warden wants group D to dig larger holes two by two and go through all the soil. Stanley
concludes they weren’t just digging to “build character” (p. 71). He realizes they are
definitely looking for something
but also that they are
looking in the wrong place
