Discussion 1 - Week 7
COL LA PS E
Discussion 1: Engaging and Assessing Across Levels of Social Work
Practice
Maintaining the perspective that people are in constant interaction with their
environment and the social systems therein (the Person in Environment
perspective) is a key concept in the field of social work. Social work recognizes
that the concerns or problems individuals face might be due to many causes.
This view also supports another goal of social work which is to empower clients
who are marginalized and oppressed to collaborate in the resolution of their
problems or concerns as experts of their life experiences. As such, looking at a
problem and assessing the needs of individuals depends on a review of the
challenges they have encountered on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.
Assessing the situation on all three levels will provide a holistic map for goal
planning. For example, you might assess a client’s individual strengths and
challenges, the support or lack of support received from family, friends, and

,others in the client’s life regarding the issue, and the societal resources
available to address the problem.

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Select either the
course-specific case study for Abdel or Pedro. Then, consider what information
you need to gather and what questions you need to ask in order to complete a
proper assessment for the client, based on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels
of social work practice.
Post by Day 3 a brief explanation of the information you need to gather and
the questions you need to ask, in order to complete a proper assessment for the
client in the case study you selected, based on the micro, mezzo, and macro
levels of social work practice. Be sure to reference in your post which case
study you selected.
Support your posts and responses with specific references to the Learning
Resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.
Read a selection of your colleagues' posts.
Respond by Day 5 to at least two colleagues who selected a different course-
specific case study from the one you selected and explain any insight you
gained from having read your colleague’s post.
Return to this Discussion to read the responses to your initial post. Note what
you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the
comments your colleagues made.

RE: Discussion 1 - Week 7

I chose Working with immigrants and refugees:
The Case of Abdel (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen,
2014). The information I would need to gather to
make an accurate assessment for Abdel would
include, where he lives, who he lives with, a brief
history of education, what event occurred that
brought him to the United States. In sum, I would
need to start with his demographics and case
history. This would be a starting point for the micro
level of social work. For the macro level, I would
inquire about his family structure, his social
relationships and/or kinships as well as any
community supports he is using currently. On the
macro level, I would ask Abdel what services would
he be willing to accept? Would he want to get SNAP
benefits? Is applying for HUD housing something
he might be interested in? Would he want to go
back to school, and if he did would he want some

, information for refugees from the local
universities? In terms of the mezzo level of social
work, I would ask my client about his experience
with his country’s government, the country’s public
policies. I would want to get a feel of how he feels
about public services before I offered them to him,
as to not offend him.
Asking open ended questions is like lighting a match to a
fire, the hope is there will be conversation between both people
once the fire is lit. When a question that can be answered with a
yes or no is asked, a social worker will not get much
information.
As for some questions I would ask, here are a few to get the
conversation started:
1. What do you want to do?

2. Where would you want to live?

3. What do you know about the area you are living

right now? Is this someplace you would like to live
on a permanent basis?
4. How would you feel about applying for SNAP

benefits?
5. How many people do you know now who are in the

same situation you are in? Is there a local place
where you meet socially and if there is, what is it?
6. How do you feel right now? What would you like to

feel like? What accomplishments are you most
proud of?
7. How do you feel about the two of us working on a

plan for services as well as utilizing resources we
can find to help you?
