, EXPERIMENT NO. 1
Objective:
To calculate volumetric efficiency of four stroke Diesel Engine

Introduction:
Volumetric efficiency in internal combustion engine refers to the efficiency with which engine
can take charge in and out of cylinder. This quantity also shows the amount of air trapped in
cylinder at the end of exhaust stoke. The volumetric efficiency can be increased if forced
induction systems are used e.g. in race cars.
The volumetric efficiency formula is:

Procedure:
1. Setup the apparatus according to the apparatus manual.
2. Start the engine and hold the accelerator at fixed position.
3. Now measure differential pressure, mass flow intake of air, power output, torque and
engine speed.
4. Run the computer software given by manufacturer to record pressure crank angle
diagram.
5. Repeat the same experiment three-five times at different engine parameters.
