McCormick & Company has been in business for over one hundred and thirty years
selling to businesses worldwide. The main products that McCormick sells are spices and
flavoring for foods. One can say that McCormick has been successful for all these years are due
to the part of how they treat training and developing their employees. The CEO of McCormick
Robert Lawless states that McCormick will invest every penny in training and developing
[Bin07]. Furthermore, Lawless states that learning is driven by one thing strategy [Bin07]. As
the VP of learning at McCormick it is essential that training and developing continues. In order
to continue the training and development of the employees of McCormick & Company we will
need supporting funds from the board of directors. The VP of learning should create and
evaluate development initiatives as well as align with the business strategies of McCormick. It is
also important to design a metric that shows the value of training and who is responsible for
training and teaching.
From the article Growing Talent and Sales at McCormick we learn that one key area in
development that supports McCormick’s growth plans is a leadership development program
known as multiple management board (MMB)[Bin07]. The MMB’s purpose is a learning
program that combines developing talent and with achieving company goals [Bin07].
McCormick has four main strategies; to grow sales, innovative, manage their cost base and
succession [Bin07]. The training and development program will correspond with these four
business strategies. Strategic training and development initiatives are learning based actions that
a company takes to help it achieve their business strategy[Noe171] . The strategic training and
development initiative provides the companies road map to guide specific training and
development activities[Noe171]. The road map that McCormick will use will follow that sales
stay strong and grow. This can be done by sending new hires and employees who have been
