Dear Prof. Lewis:
The difference between empathy and sympathy, is that sympathy is explained as feeling sorry
for someone and it drives disconnection. While empathy’s most important quality is,
perspective taking where it’s a person’s ability to take another person’s perspective, staying
out of judgement and recognizing other people’s emotions as you communicate with them.
Thus, empathy can be considered as a great attribute to have.
Empathy can play a huge role in communicating with different cultures. Even though two
people can be from two completely different places, experiences between these two people can
if fact be very similar. When people empathize with each other, each person is feeling what the
other person is feeling; therefore, people can eventually build up trust with one another. Hence,
empathy can strengthen a connection between two people.
The ability to sense other people’s feelings is one of the most important aspects when it comes
to working in a diverse workplace. This can be explained because by placing oneself in another
person’s shoes, it can provide a true connection between people. Working in a diverse
workplace can sometimes be difficult, so having the ability of empathy can simplify one’s
experience in a diverse workplace. Being empathetic not only can help oneself, but also uplift a
person from grief or sadness.
Sincerely,
