IMPORTANCE OF STANDARDIZED ASSESSMENT IN EDUCATION
INTRODUCTION:
Assessment plays an important role in education as it establishes whether learning objectives in a
course are being met. It is a critical step in the learning process. Assessments affect grades,
placement, curriculum, instructional needs and methods and placement in higher level education.
Assessment helps in developing and customizing teaching methods and styles and also affects
learning patterns of students.
THE ROLE OF ASSESSMENT:
Assessment is vital in the process of learning and motivation. The type of testing varies the
learning approach of a student and the study behaviors they will use. Hence, assessments should
integrate grading, learning and motivation for students. Well designed testing methods provide
valuable information about student learning- what they learned, how well they learned it and
where they struggled.
Today, students need to know not only basic reading and arithmetic skills but also be able to
think critically, to analyze, to be creative and make inferences on topics and issues. These skills
are essential for them to face a world that is continually changing. Changes in the requirement of
base skills and knowledge require new learning goals. New learning goals change the dynamic
between assessment and instruction.
Teachers need to have an active role in making decisions about the purpose of tests and the type
of content being assessed. Effective assessment practices begin when instructors question which
elements they would like to assess and what learning looks like in their specific course.
Questions like- “What kinds of content knowledge am I expecting students to demonstrate and at
what level?”, “What aspects of thinking do I want students to develop in my course and
demonstrate through course assessments?” and “Are there professional skills or attitudes I expect
students to develop in my course?” are good starting points to elicit what kind of learning the
teacher wants to measure.
Some examples of the different kinds of learning that can be assessed are:
● Professional skills
● Factual knowledge
● Writing skills
● Problem solving skills
● Conceptual understanding
● Reasoning skills
● Creativity
● Critical reflection skills
● Application skills
● Collaboration skills
● Civic and global learning
