1st speaking activity
Note: The words and phrases in quotation marks would be written on the whiteboard as I go through
the instructions. The highlighted words would be underlined.
T: The text we just read includes several examples of “frequency adverbs.” These adverbs tell us how
often Bobbie does an activity. Now I will divide you all into 4 groups of 3 students and I want each of
you to tell me one activity that you do using a frequency adverb.
Group 1, your adverb is “usually.” Talk to each other about something that you “usually” do.
Group 2, your adverb is “occasionally.” Discuss something that you do “occasionally.”
Group 3, your adverb is “sometimes.” Come up with an activity that you do “sometimes.”
And Group 4, your adverb is “always.” Try to think of something that you “always” do.
Remember to include when you do the activity you chose. For example, I might say “in the mornings,
I always eat yogurt,” or “I sometimes go to the beach in the summer.”
I will give you all 5 minutes to talk and think of a phrase using your frequency adverb, and then I want
you to tell the class what you came up with.
2nd speaking activity
T: Now I want you to go back into your groups. I have written some questions on the board for you to
review. In each group, I want one person to ask one question to the other two students. You can pick
any of the questions, but each student must ask a different question.
“What kind of work do your parents do? What are their jobs?”
“Do you have any siblings (brothers/sisters)? Are they older or younger?”
“Who usually does the housework in your family?”
“Where does your family frequently go on vacation?”
“Which day of the week do you normally shop for groceries?”
