American Hegemony” Article
"Women's Magazines in English from 1920 to 1972: Instruments of American
Hegemony," was an essay on American dominance in the Philippines, which persisted long
after the country's colonial authority ended.
Several Filipinos were clearly opposed to the Americans' offer to rule the Philippines,
but the Americans recognized that the Filipinos were not yet ready to manage their nation, so
they devised a strategy to persuade them to accept their offer. They start a campaign to
deconstruct the Filipinos' hesitation to accept them as their new colonial overlords by
developing periodicals. Exclusively for women in order to earn the favor of the Filipino people.
The Americans had recognized that the Philippines' demographic, is primarily
dominated by women. Thus they were interested in emphasizing women's concerns. As a result,
the Americans had to introduce their way of life to the Filipinos as a means to win their hearts.
It turns out that many Filipinos, particularly women, wished to live a life similar to that of
Americans. As a result, publications like "The Woman's Journal," which was the first magazine
mostly in the 1920s, had to cover themes that would enrich the bulk of citizens while still
displaying the Western way of life.
The magazines instilled a sense of fantasy and glamor in the minds of Filipino women
throughout time, which is why, from 1920 to 1972, the production of women's magazines
became extremely popular since they cater to a wide range of female readers. There were
periodicals established for many sorts of women from all walks of life, including teenagers,
yuppies, and moms.
Also, one thing that struck me was the fact that the substance of the magazines was not
just to promote American goods and products to the Philippines and affect the Filipinos' way
of life, but also to assist women to acquire knowledge of women's rights. Because women are
queens of everything, the authors and editors of magazines did their hardest to prevent women
from earning the title of "queen of the house." Being said that women can pursue careers in
disciplines. Which happen traditionally dominated by men.
