, QUESTION 1

Renaissance

(a) Prior to the development of modern engineering, artisans and craftsmen
such as millwrights, clockmakers, instruments maker, and surveyors used
mathematics. Aside from these professions, universities were thought to have
little practical significance in terms of technology. The mining engineering
treatise, which also included section on geology, mining, and chemistry, is a
standard reference for the state of mechanical arts during the Renaissance.
The invention of the movable cast metal type printing press, with a pressing
mechanism adapted from an olive screw press, resulted in a massive
increase in the number of books and titles published. The era is distinguished

directly tied to military research and development, technologies, including
electronic computing, might have developed as rapidly as they did in part
because of war. Radio, radar and early sound recording were key
technologies that paved the way for the telephone, fax machine and magnetic
storage of data. Energy and engine technology improvements were also vast,
including nuclear power. Transportation by rocketry was another milestone in
the 20th century.

(b) Began on January 1, 1901 (MCMI), and ended on December 31, 2000

mining and transport driven by the invention of the stream engine. Above all
else, the revolution was driven by cheap energy in the form of coal, produced
in ever-increasing amounts from the abundant resources of Britain. Coal
converted to coke provided the blast furnace and cast iron in much larger
amounts than before, and a range of structures could be created, such as the
iron bridge. Cheap coal meant that industry was no longer constrained by
