Absorption of micronutrients
Introduction of micronutrients:
Micronutrients are essential elements required by an organism
in trace amount for the growth and development.
Micronutrient includes minerals and vitamins.
1.Minerals
Minerals are inorganic compounds that exist in the body as
ions.
Function:
They are required for building of bones
, essential l for teeth
Required for blood clotting.
2.vitamins
Vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny
amount by an organism for specific function.
Function:
Essential for normal growth and development and for healthy
maintenance of cells , tissues and organs.
Absorption of micronutrients:
About 90% of the nutrients absorption occurs in small
intestine , the other 10% occurs in stomach and large intestine .
Small intestine;
The inside surface of small intestine contains many folds
covered by villi .on each villi are even thinner micro-villi that
are nutrient specific is where Absorption occurs.
Absorption of micronutrient in small intestine:
During the process of absorption nutrients such as minerals and
vitamins pass through the lumen of small intestine into the
blood stream. The blood works to distribute these nutrients to
the rest of body.
