The Immoral Video Shop
Mr. Jun Quesadilla owns a video shop in Manila. His store has a wide variety of original
VCDs and DVDs which he gets from a legal source and approved by the Videogram Regulatory
Board. He has all the legal papers and permits to operate this type of business. However, Mr. Jun
Quesadilla has secret Room in his store which he uses to avoid the authorities. The Room
contains all the latest titles of pirated VCDs and DVD, Including X-rated tapes. He also uses
another selling strategy to make more money by telling customers that the VCCDs and DVDs
they want to rent are “reserved” and he would only give this to them if they would rent them for
higher price.
Questions:
1. Is it right to sell pirated VCDs, DVDs and X-rated tapes in the show of a certified video
shop? Briefly explain why?
Big NO. It is not right to sell pirated VCDs, DVDs and X-rated tapes in the show
of a certified video simply because it is illegal. By means of “illegal,” copyrighting
material without permission is a serious crime as selling these could destroy
entertainment industries specially producers and artists. And given the fact that the shop
is said as a “certified” video shop, it should comply with the law. This illegal action could
probably destroy its certification or legality once discovered.
2. In your opinion, would you patronize pirated CDs and DVDs which are cheaper than the
original one because it is more economical? Why or why not?
To be honest, I find it really hard to stand in this matter because I have also
bought pirated CDs and DVDs since I was a little. I think everyone knows that buying or
supporting pirated stuff is against the law, but when we consider how hard it is to earn
money in our country, this wrong act seems to be reasonable. I like it when the things I
like is cheaper because it is easier for me to afford it, so if I am asked to choose between
buying pirated CD/DVD and the original and say that there is no right or choice, I will be
wise and still pick the pirated one because I will benefit most from that choice.
