Racial Discrimination
In this essay, I will be demonstrating the ways that I can make a change in social
injustice. The social injustice that I chose is Racial Discrimination. This issue is world
wide and we must act to stop the racial abuse that people face on a daily basis. There
are so many racial discrimination cases around the world but since the United-States of
America has a big media coverage, it makes it seem like this country is very racist.
Thus, third world countries are even worse and we need to act.
The official definition of social justice is “fairness and equality for all people.”(1) People
have human rights and should be treated fairly because we are human beings created
in God's image. A Catholic social teaching is a treasure trove of information on how to
develop a decent society and live holy lives in the face of modern challenges. There are
many catholic social teachings but the one that I have chosen to incorporate with this
topic is Dignity of the Human Person. A official definition of racial disrimination is “any
discrimination against any individual on the basis of their skin color, or racial or ethnic
origin.”(3) I am passionate about this topic because the media makes the United-States
of America seem very bad but there are many other countries that are even worse. I am
from Lebanon and it is one of the most racist countries in the world but not all people
are racist. This is why I am passionate about racial discrimination. Dignitiy of the Human
Person relates to racial discrimination beacuse it talks about the respect of every human
and there rights.
Injustice is a violation of rights which makes it unfair. There are many types of injustices
like discrimination, ageism and homophobia. “Respect for the human person entails
respect for the rights that flow from his dignity as a creature. These rights are prior to
society and must be recognized by it. They are the basis of the moral legitimacy of
every authority: by flouting them, or refusing to recognize them in its positive legislation,
a society undermines its own moral legitimacy. If it does not respect them, authority can
rely only on force or violence to obtain obedience from its subjects. It is the Church's
role to remind men of the good will of these rights and to distinguish them from
unwarranted or false claims.” (CCC 1930)(4) This quote states that respect for the
human being implies respect for his rights as a creature. These rights exist
independently of society and must be respected by it. They are the foundation of any
authority's moral legitimacy. By disobeying them or refusing to recognise them in
positive legislation, a society jeopardizes its own moral validity.
