COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is the first course at the undergraduate level, designed primarily for students in
mathematics, pure and applied sciences. However, it also meets the need of students in other
fields. The course’s focus is to impart useful skills on the students in order to enhance their
knowledge in methods of solving mathematical problems, prepare them for other specialized
applications to be encountered at higher levels and exposed students to the skills required to
attain level of proficiency in the Field of Science, ICT, and Engineering. Topics to be covered
include number systems, indices and logarithms, surds, mathematical induction, elementary set
theory, equations, series and sequences, partial fractions, binomial theorem and binomial series,
complex numbers, Matrices and Determinant.
, COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this course are to:
Introduce the students to words and elementary concepts in Elementary mathematics.
Familiarize the students with the peculiar characteristics in Elementary mathematics.
Expose the students to the need for and the demands of mathematics in Science world.
Prepare the students for the contemporary science world.
Inculcate appropriate mathematical skills required in Science and Engineering.
Educate the students on how to use mathematical techniques in solving real life problems.
Educate the students on how to integrate mathematical models in Science and
Engineering
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES/COMPETENCES
Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be able to:
Identify and represent set of numbers on a real line and perform basic set operations on
the number system.
State and apply laws of indices and logarithms appropriately.
Identify surds, perform basic operations on surds and rationalize surd.
State the steps and prove an assertion by mathematical induction.
Define what a set is, identify sets from some given statements, rewrite sets in different set
notation, identify the different kinds of set with examples, and be able to represent set in
a Venn diagram.
Identify a quadratic equation, know the types of methods of solving quadratic equation
and match appropriate solution methods to particular quadratic equation.
Find the sum of an AP, GP and apply it to simple and compound interest problems.
Resolve into partial fractions
State binomial theorem and apply to generate binomial series
Identify a complex numbers, perform algebra on complex number, apply the conjugate to
evaluate some complex problems and plot graphs of complex numbers.
Identify and represent set of equations in a matrix form, identify the different types of
matrix, perform operations on matrix, find the minor, cofactor, determinant, inverse of a
matrix and solve systems of linear equation.
