As Petra Nemcova rightly stated, “We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm ourselves with knowledge: so many lives wouldn’t have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness.” Natural adversities are inevitable hazardous occurrences that are aggravated by environmental factors and human activities. When these traumatic calamities transpire, they cause catastrophic injuries, destruction, or massive loss of life depending on their magnitude. However, the conditions under which these disasters occur are innate and uncontrollable, but the effects can be mitigated. For instance, seashores are usually associated with disasters, such as tides and hurricanes that cause extensive damage and destruction and have severe impact on the general population of humans and animals. According to Boruff and Cutter (2007), some human activities like mining, poor farming methods, and industrialization cause significant climate changes and ultimately global warming.

Introduction

As Petra Nemcova rightly stated, “We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm

ourselves with knowledge: so many lives wouldn’t have to be lost if there was enough disaster

preparedness.” Natural adversities are inevitable hazardous occurrences that are aggravated by

environmental factors and human activities. When these traumatic calamities transpire, they

cause catastrophic injuries, destruction, or massive loss of life depending on their magnitude.

However, the conditions under which these disasters occur are innate and uncontrollable, but the

effects can be mitigated. For instance, seashores are usually associated with disasters, such as

tides and hurricanes that cause extensive damage and destruction and have severe impact on the

general population of humans and animals. According to Boruff and Cutter (2007), some human

activities like mining, poor farming methods, and industrialization cause significant climate

changes and ultimately global warming. All together, the effects of such actions culminate in

natural disasters, such as droughts and famines. Conversely, some disasters that happen without

any human influence include tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and earthquakes among

others. To control the effects of such disasters, scientists study the factors that cause their

occurrence and design corrective measures to minimize their impact on society. Even though

some areas are more vulnerable or prone to disasters compared to others, measures such as

proper analyses of the hazards and vulnerability studies help people to take prior precaution and

hence the minimal effects they have on human lives (English, Friedland, & Orooji, 2017). A

study of catastrophes that are prone to different areas around the world was conducted in a city

called Mobile City. Some of the calamities that were selected during the case study were

hurricanes, flooding, and disaster fires. The researchers investigated several causes of natural
