What is the priority action the nurse should take?
- The priority action the nurse should take is to stay with the patient. This patient is having an
anxiety attack and is very scared. If the nurse leaves the patient, they may feel abandoned.
Another priority action would be to remain calm. Being calm in this situation can help calm the
patient. It is also important to reduce the stimuli of the environment and make sure it’s a quiet
place for the patient. This can minimize the risk of increased anxiety. Ultimately, we want to
keep the patient safe along with the staff and family members that are present. Increased anxiety
at panic levels can cause the patient to become harmful to themselves and others which is what
we are trying to prevent. Another priority would be assessing the need for medication to reduce
her anxiety level. It is a priority of the nurse to keep the patient safe from themselves and to
prevent them from harming others around them while helping them return to their calm mental
state.

Additionally, answer these following questions completely, in full sentences.

• What are examples of therapeutic communication techniques that are appropriate to use
when communicating with an anxious client? What are examples of non-therapeutic
communication techniques?
-Some examples of therapeutic techniques that could be used with an anxious client
includes reflection, active listening, restating, reflecting feelings, encouraging
formulation of a plan of action, collaboration, and encouraging evaluation (Varcarolis, E.
M., 2017). These techniques can help the patient explain how they are feeling and why
they think they are feeling that way. It can help establish the possible triggers for their
anxiety and how to prevent another attack. It will also help them clarify their feelings and
let them know that you are listening and that you are there to help. It will also help
establish a trusting relationship. Some non-therapeutic techniques include minimizing
feelings, falsely reassuring, asking “why” questions, asking excessive questions, and
changing the subject.

• Why is it important for the nurse to use therapeutic communication techniques when
interacting with a client who has anxiety? What are the consequences of not using
therapeutic communication techniques? How would this potentially affect the therapeutic
relationship?
-Using therapeutic communication will help the client identify their triggers and make a
plan to decrease their chances of another attack happening. It will also help the client
better express their feelings and let them know that you are there for them and that you
care about how they feel. Non-therapeutic techniques place blame, minimize the patients
feelings, make them think that they are overreacting, letting them know that they will be
fine when they think otherwise, and they make the patient think that you are not
interested in what they are saying and that you have ‘better things to do’ and that they are
wasting your time. This would affect the therapeutic relationship because they may think
