Choose a work of art from the reading in Chapter 1. Discuss how the
work is a reflection of the ancient culture that created it. Also, did
anything particularly surprise or impress you about the work of art or the
ancient people who created it?
Paleolithic Culture and Its Artifacts
The Paleolithic is also known as the Stone Age. The artifacts found from
this era are the first evidence of tool making. Since they were hunter and
gathers they carved tools and weapons out of stone. There is even
evidence of fire making from charcoal bits excavated. We also see the
earliest evidence or architecture. The nomads would travel north for the
summer and south for the winter. They would live in caves or build
houses from bones and tusks of mammoths.
I find this art of tool making most fascinating. Living in Arizona and
exploring the outdoors it is not unusual to stumble across remnants of
primitive living areas. I have found arrowheads and even pottery. It’s
impressive evidence of the evolution of technology.

The insight into this week’s material that I got by seeing examples of the art in
the digital museum comparable to seeing music live versus listening to a
recording. There is a certain intimacy that is removed by visiting a digital

they could carry it with them to their next life. Next the moisture was removed
from the body using salt, which prevented the corpse from decay. Then they
wrapped they body with linen and resin.
The ancient Egyptians believed when a person died they made a journey to the
next world, and in order to live in that world their body had to be preserved,
