It is a 'roadmap' for your
whole project. At this point it is a ‘working thesis’ which means that it can
change a bit as you uncover your research materials and gain more information.

The invention of the sewing machine impacted America greatly, specifically impacting
the textile industry and women.
Women were the ones working in the textile mills, and the ones using the sewing
machines. Some people believed that using the sewing machines would infringe on their skill as
a crafted seamstress. While others believed that it freed them to pursue other things rather than
sit home and sew clothes. Women working with the machines were thought out to have gained a
new skill, and were seen as just as important for the industry. The sewing machine increased the
social acceptance by allowing clothing to be a mass produced item.
The invention of the sewing machine could be viewed as to, “diminish poverty, hunger,
and dirt” (On the Influence of the Sewing-Machine on Female Health 1867). In American
culture, sewing had long been viewed as “women’s work,” and was often associated with
domestic activity performed by women as part of being a good wife and mother, but also out of
necessity as access to clothing was usually expensive. During the 18 th and some of the 19th
century sewing was contained to be attributed by the domesticated woman. Many advertisements
during this time period were geared toward women and/or the family. Rather than function as an
