In this picture created by Peter Paul Ruben, we see a self-portrait of himself sitting
by a tree with his first wife Isabella Brant. According to the Web Gallery of Art (WGA),
these two “a state of happiness resulting from new love” (WGA, 2018). This painting is
called “The Artist and his wife at Honeysuckle Bower” found sitting underneath a
honeysuckle tree with wife’s hand in his, they give off a relaxed and happy/calm mood
enjoying their time together. The Lines in this piece are crisp and defined boarders
without areas of smudging or fading into the surrounding scene. The Hues in this
picture are bright and bold, the green grass, the red dress, the yellow on her bodice as
well as the yellow of his tights are all popping bits of color from this piece. These
primary colors are light with energy. This picture shows Balance and Perspective by
the flow of the picture from Ruben to his wife. Though he sits higher than her in the
picture, “She, while somewhat lower in the composition, is in no way his inferior in social
rank, and lovingly takes his hand, casting a calm and friendly glance at the beholder”
(WGA, 2018). They both sit comfortably in this picture and close together which
exclaims new love.
