Example: Sensation – I like listening to my music before going to sleep, but if my parents hear my music after 10 pm, I get in trouble. If my music is below their absolute threshold, then I won’t get in trouble, because they won’t hear it. It is really hard to keep it below their absolute thresholds because it seems that even the faintest amount of sound coming from my room is detectable. In this example, the absolute threshold is the lowest amount of volume that they can detect up to 50% of the time (Grison, Heatherton, & Gazzaniga, 2017). 1. Absolute Threshold a. There are times; I thirst for water. However, I do not like the taste of pure ordinary water. An absolute threshold is, b. The smallest measure of physical stimulation required to distinguish a sensory info half of the time it is present. (Grison, Heatherton, Gazzaniga, 2017, p. 160). When I am in the mood for flavored water, I can take a package of flavor and pour it into my water and enjoy the drink, but I am not a sugary taste kind of person. Therefore, I will pour the flavor into my water and taste it to make sure is not sweet. I could pour a little amount, to enjoy the taste, and stop and save the leftovers of the solution. Even though my sister could empty the entire solution into the water, and still will not be satisfied with the taste and will get another package to make it sweeter. My absolute threshold could be a teaspoon of the flavoring. However, my sister would be a tablespoon of the flavor, because a teaspoon for my sister will not satisfy her taste by the least. In any case, two teaspoons for me would be too many. 2. Difference Threshold a. Early in the morning, to completely wake up, I have to tune in to music to gain motivation for the day. Difference Threshold is, The minimum difference in physical stimulation required to recognize a difference between sensory information sources. (Grison, Heatherton, Gazzaniga, 2017, p. 160) My ears are exceptionally delicate toward the beginning of the day, as I am yet to be awake, and my family room is calmer in the day, so to accomplish the right volume for my ears to hear the music, it ought to be at a low to medium volume. Around the evening or closer to the night when I have individuals over or when I am totally awake, to hear the music at the volume and the occurrence that I would like, I need it to be more intense in volume than the beginning of the day.
