753 BCE – 1453 CE – Ancient Rome
Name of Artifact: The Colosseum, Italy, Rome
Period of Construction: 72 - 80 CE
Narrative:
The Colosseum (also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre) is a large arena built in the
first century (72 CE) in the shape of an ellipse. It was started during the reign of
Emperor Vespasian but commissioned by his son, Titus in 80 CE when he had assumed
the throne.
The Colosseum, just like other magnificent buildings, was a grand construction scheme
initiated by Emperor Vespasian in order to restore Rome to its former glory following a
recent turmoil and also show the world that ‘resurgent’ Rome was still very much the
center of the ancient world.
