Give me liberty, or give me death! Rhetorical Analysis
In 1775, at the height of the American War of Independence, Patrick Henry, an American
politician, and attorney penned one of the most famous speeches, "Give me liberty or give me
death," that prompted the government to deliver troops based in Virginia to the Revolutionary
War. A speech that was seen as a deliverance to the American people turned out to a classic
example of a rhetoric application. Therefore, with this in mind, the following is an in-depth
rhetoric analysis of the "Give me liberty or give me death" speech.
Some of the most common rhetoric devices that have been applied by Patrick Henry
include repetition, restatement, parallelism, rhetorical question, metaphors, allusion, appeal to
ethos, and imagery. In the speech, Patrick states, "I have but one lamp by which my feet are
guided, and that is the lamp of experience" (Henry). This is an example of a metaphor because
Patrick uses a lamp to illustrate his ability to lead people in a path full of darkness. Additionally,
by stating that he has the "lamp of experience," Patrick is insinuating that he has the right skills
