The completed work in my portfolio represent me as a learner and healthcare professional
in many ways. In my work from Professional Roles and Values task 2, it represents me as a
healthcare professional in the way I interact with patients and families. I was very tactful with
my response to the unusual patient request and I feel I was able to handle it professionally and in
a satisfying way for both the patient and family. This emphasizes and represents how I try to be
as a healthcare professional all the time in my interactions with patients and families. In my work
in Evidence Based Practice task 1, it represents me as a learner because while working on that
task, I was constantly learning and thinking. The task showed me that thinking critically and
scrutinizing research is important, and it showed me firsthand why it was so important. This
allowed me to learn in an interactive way, instead of just simply telling me. By actually
implementing what I was learning, I was able to truly feel and understand what was being taught
and I feel this is the best way to learn something. This represents my ideal learning style and how
I prefer to understand and retain new information. In my Leadership experience task, it
represented me as a healthcare professional because I was collaborating with other professionals
to help implement the solution I had proposed to address high nursing turnover. Currently as an
inpatient nurse, I often collaborate with other professionals when advocating for the patients. I
have to keep the patients best interests in mind and make sure they are taken care of to the best of
my ability. In my Community and Population focused nursing task, it represented me as a learner
because I was able to interact with a community and learn what it takes to assess and diagnose
problems in that community. I was able to see firsthand how to implement what I was learning
and see the results of what I was practicing relatively quickly. This is a great way for me to learn
because I thrive on receiving feedback and input. It helps me evaluate how I am learning and
what I can improve upon. My work in this task really represents me as a learner because I was
, able to learn more and more as I spent more time on it. I was actively building upon what I was
learning, which improves my learning efficiency.
I believe that my professional strengths are patient and family communication,
communication and collaboration with other professionals, learning from mistakes, and paying
attention to detail. An artifact in my portfolio that represents my professional strength of patient
and family communication is my work from Professional Roles and Values task 2. In this task, I
was able to handle a patient request that involved asking a family member to leave and provide
some privacy. Because of the sensitive nature of the request, it needed to be made carefully and
with strong communication. I was able to showcase my strength in how I communicated with
both the patient and family member in this work. In my Leadership Experience task, I was able
to communicate and collaborate with other professionals when trying to convince them of the
problem of high nursing turnover. Communication with other professionals is a strength of mine,
and I was able to represent this strength with this task. In the Community and Population
Focused Nursing task, I was able to represent my professional strength of paying attention to
details. By looking closely at the details of the community, such as a lack of nutritional
resources, lack of parks, and demographics that indicated worsening obesity rates, I was able to
practice and represent my professional strengths of paying attention to details.
One of the major challenges I faced during my progression in the program was passing a
certain class called Evidence Based Practice. I really spent many weeks stuck on this class
because I thought it was too complicated and lengthy. I had trouble choosing a topic for the 2nd
task and really procrastinated on doing so. I feel like I wasted a lot of time on procrastinating and
not putting my focus on the course when I should have. If I had focused from the start I would
