The APN Professional Development Plan
Scope of Practice defines the duty a qualified healthcare professional is considered
having the ability to perform under his or her professional license as long as the required terms
are followed. It outlines the actions and procedures an individual allowed under their license.
Scope of Practice imparts boundaries to a providers individual practice which enables protection
for both the patient and healthcare provider. The Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice
describes the “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how” of nursing practice
(NursingWorld, 20).
The purpose of this assignment is to provide an overview of the Nurse Practice Act , the
APN’s Scope of Practice guidelines for the state I will further my career as an NP. I will futher
elaborate on the educational, licensure, regulatory requirements, NP prescriptive authority and
the NP practice which is allowed for that state. I will also discuss the NONPF Core
Competencies, the competencies that I feel are my personal strengths and the Leadership styles
which will assist me with the development of my future NP role.
APN Scope of Practice
My current place of residency and intended state of practice after graduation will take place in
the state of New Jersey. The Scope of Practice is based on the needs of the patient. The Consensus
Model encompasses the four pillars that define APRN SOP: (LACE) licensure, accreditation,
certification, and education (Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation,
Certification & Education, 2008).

An individual should a licensed Registered Nurse and must possess a Masters degree in
nursing. All individuals should have completed the basic curriculm of specific Master level
