HS 2611 NUTRITION
Identify the role they play in your diet. Explain the possible
health risks involved in overconsumption of certain lipids and
proteins. What are some of the dietary choices or substitutions
you currently do or would like to do, to maintain a healthy diet?
Please provide at least 2-4 examples for each macronutrient.
Introduction
In this week, we learned about certain interesting topics, such as
how lipids and proteins are digested and absorbed by the body and
their role in health and disease; also we learned about blood
cholesterol, diseases involving proteins, and most importantly, the
structure, components, and functions of lipids and proteins. All three
of these elements, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids, are
very important in the food diet for everyone because of their charac-
teristics, which we will explain below. Also, it is important to say that
even their overconsumption brings great risks to the human body.
Main body
1. Carbohydrates:
As we learned last week, carbohydrates, which include sugars and
starch, are the main element and the most important source of en-
ergy for the human body, and also the source of energy for one of
the most important organs, such as the brain. Carbohydrates also
perform an important function in the digestion process, since some
carbohydrates, such as fibers, play the role of food for the good
bacteria that live in the intestine or stomach, and help the human
body to digest, or even reduce cholesterol and blood sugar (Zim-
merman & Snow, 2012).
As I explained above, carbohydrates are made up of nutrients such
as sugars, starches, and fiber. The digestive system breaks down
