The content included in these notes is all you need to know for your matric year, and partially grade 11. Throughout my High School academic career, I only ever received above 85% for theoretical art. These notes, therefore, offer an excessive amount of knowledge to equip you for your exams, trials, and final assessments of Matric.

, QUESTION 2:
⇢ Contemporary Conceptual Artworks:
‣ These works focus on the idea of the art rather than the artwork itself.
‣ The audience participates in the art whether it be visually or physical .: these works have relations to
political and cultural aspects.
‣ There are broad categories including performance, new media & installation art.
‣ Current events that are happening in society bring attention to the artwork {these works mostly relate to
current events which therefore results in attention Brough upon these events}.
‣ Materials used: every day + readymade objects.

INTERNATIONAL ART

☞ DADAIS
→Post world war 1.
→These works can be described as anti-nationalism [meaning absurdity to mock society].
→Artists don’t follow the rules, they don’t have specific guidelines, and there are no rules.
→The work aims to provoke an emotional reaction for viewers.
→The work is non-sensual.
→No main medium is used in Dadaism.
→Artists strive to create something that means nothing - these offshoots influenced current trends in society.
→The artworks were destroyed before becoming 'acceptable’ to society or seen as the norm, this gave the
artworks great value.

MARCEL DUCHAMP
BICYCLE WHEEL

• Completed in1913.
• It is of a metal wheel mounted on painted wooden stool.
• The wooden stall was a readymade, everyday object thus
giving the viewer an aesthetic experience as the materials are
simple, yet complicated.
• Focus themes:
- Social, political, historical views
- Art as idea not the product itself
• A combination of 2 mass-produced objects to create a non-
functional machine.
• Mass-produced: anonymous, identical, similar.
• This work rejected artistic skill as to most works of Dadaism.

M

, ☞ SURREALIS
→Post world war 1.
→These works illustrated dreams, which were the authentic and truer reality therefore seen as 'surreal' [like
dada].
→Both the unconscious and the conscious mind were implemented to result in pure thought seen as
mysterious and questionable, drawing the viewer into the work.
→Allows drives of hunger, sexuality, anger and fear.

SALVADOR DALI
PERSISTENCE OF MEMOR
• Completed in1931.
• Oil on canvas with dreamlike landscape of melting clocks and a flesh-like
face.
• Time was represented by the melting clocks and decay of ants.
• Hard objects are limp, no hope.
• The monstrous creature in the work reprints the artists face : long eyelashes
are represented by an insect. The faces tongue oozing out the nose is
represented as a snail.
• The work is ambiguous (not specific).
• There is no defined horizon (the land connects into the sky).
• There is endless space for nothing.
• Rational (melting clocks) vs irrational (bone-like structure) juxtaposes:
opposite next to each other.
• One light source (the sun) creates a surreal atmosphere.
• Melting Clocks are normal objects yet perceived in a non-realistic way,
concluding the idea is not real yet your brain makes you think it is real.
• Themes:
- Awareness of psychology
- manifest of societal systems art
