Activity 1:
Name and briefly discuss 5 purposes of a literature review. To help you with this, study
Chapter 2 of your prescribed book (Terre Blanche et al., 2006) on „Doing an information
search‟, as well as information on the literature review in this and other tutorial letters. If you
cannot find Terre Blanche‟s book, use any other source on the purpose of a literature review.

Activity 2:
Name and briefly discuss 5 qualities of a well-written literature review. [10 marks]
1. The literature review should not be too general or vague. Facts should be very specific.
2. The literature review should identify gaps in previous research. The review should
bring shortcomings of previous research on the research topic to light
3. It should be well structured and systematically presented. The linkages between the
information its relation to the research problem should be clearly stated.
4. The literature review should provide clear definitions of key concepts. The keywords
or variables should be well defined in the literature review.
5. The literature review should contain only relevant information. It should only include
information that is relevant to the research problem.
Activity 3:
We did a literature search on the topic (moral development during adolescence) and selected
a number of relevant articles for you. You now need to search for five additional, recent (no
older than six year) articles on this topic. Keep your research problem in mind, and focus on
recent (and relevant) research articles on factors influencing moral development in
adolescence. (Remember to include the details of these articles in your reference list in
Assignment 27, the research report). Provide a reference list of your 5 sources by strictly
adhering to the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines (See PSYHONM
Tutorial Letter 103 point 5.2 for guidelines). Your reference list will be evaluated for the
relevance of the articles, how recent (newly published) they are, their status (peer-reviewed
journal versus an Internet communication) as well as for the accuracy of the references
according to the APA reference system. [20 marks]

Activity 4:
Write a literature review of 5-10 pages. Read all the prescribed sources as well as your five
additional sources and any other relevant material you could find. Follow the guidelines on
how to write a literature review under „Research report‟ below. Keep your title and your
research problem in mind when you write your literature review and remember to provide the
title and research problem. The following themes and subthemes may help to get you started:
Moral development as a key developmental issue during adolescence:
Different views regarding moral development
The importance of morality during adolescence
Aspects related to moral development during adolescence:
Identity formation and development
Ethical values, principles and morality
Relationship with parents (e.g. parental warmth, parent-interaction, discipline and
parental role models)
Other relevant factors as identified in the literature and relevant to your research study
A conclusion combining the two main themes above.
You will probably have to re-write your literature review a couple of times before you will be
satisfied with it. After completing your literature review, attach the review (10 pages only) to
