1st person - when the narrator is telling the story from his/her point of view, the word "I"
is present outside of quotes. I, me, mine, we, our us
2nd person - the narrator tells a listener what he/she has done or said using the
personal pronoun "you" this p.o.v. is rare.
3rd person - when the narrator is telling the story about one character that is not
him/herself and is aware of other characters' actions and possibly their thoughts. He,
him, his, hers, its, they, them
Hyperbole - A figure of speech using deliberate exaggeration or overstatement. Ex: I
have to pee like a race horse.
Metaphor - a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action
to which it is not literally applicable. Directly state opinion. Ex: Love is a battlefield.
Personification - A figure of speech in which an object or animal is given human
feelings, thoughts, or attitudes. Ex The sun smiled at us.
Alliteration - The repetition of initial consonant sounds, such as "Peter Piper picked a
peck of pickled peppers."
Simile - A comparison using "like" or "as". Ex Life is like a box of chocolates.
Onomatopoeia - A word that imitates the sound it represents.
Oxymoron - A figure of speech that combines opposite or contradictory terms in a brief
phrase. Ex Jumbo Shrimp
Allusion - an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it
explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.
expository writing - presents facts, discusses ideas, or explains a process
Persuasive writing - intended to convince a reader to adopt a particular opinion or to
perform a certain action
narrative writing - writing that tells a story
poetry - A type of literature that expresses ideas, feelings, or tells a story in a specific
form (usually using lines and stanzas)
