Complementary, Alternative, and Integrative Therapies: Alternative Therapy for Benign
Prostate Hypertrophy (Active Learning Template - System Disorder)
1) Natural Products and Herbal remedies
Aloe
Echinacea
Feverfew
Garlic
Ginger root
Ginkgo biloba
glucosamine
2) natural products and dietary herbal supplements are widely used but less tested and
regulated than conventional medications
Dosages are less precise than for more regulated medications
Because different formulations are not standardized, it can be difficult to know which
preparations can provide therapeutic effects
3) integrated substances
Cannabis (medical marijuana)
Safety and Infection Control
Reporting of Incident/Event/Irregular Occurrence/Variance - (2)
Medications Affecting Coagulation: Reviewing Laboratory Findings for a Client Receiving Heparin (Active Lea
1) activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT)
2) APTT is used to measure the clotting status when the client is receiving heparin
3) the INR and PT are used to measure clotting status in a client receiving warfarin
4) neither heparin nor warfarin affects thrombin time
Safe Medication Administration and Error Reduction: Completing an Incident Report for a Medication Error
1) 5 rights of med admin:
Right client
Right medication
Right dose
Right time
Right route
, **Right documentation
Right client education
Right to refuse
Right assessment
Right evaluation
2) Common medication errors:
Wrong med or IV fluid
Incorrect dose or IV rate
Wrong client, route, time
Admin of an allergy-inducing medication
Omission of a dose or admission of extra dose
Incorrect discontinuation of med of IV fluid
Inaccurate prescribing
Inadvertently giving med that has similar name
3) use the nursing process to prevent medication errors:
Assessment
Planning
Implementation
Evaluation
Psychosocial Integrity
Substance Use and Other Disorders and Dependencies - (1)
Substance Use Disorders: Client Teaching About Nicotine Replacement Options (Active Learning Templ
1) Bupropion
Decreased nicotine craving and manifestations of withdrawal
2) Varenicline
Nicotine receptor agonist that promotes the release of dopamine to stimulate the pleasurable effects of n
3) Nicotine replacement therapy
Pharmaceutical product substitutes for the nicotine in cigarettes or chewing tobacco
The use of NRT approximately doubles the success rate of smoking cessation
Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies
Adverse Effects/Contraindications/Side Effects/Interactions - (11)
Antibiotics Affecting the Bacterial Cell Wall: Adverse Reactions (Active Learning Template - Medication
1) Antibiotics that effect the cell wall are bactericidal
This group of antibiotics includes: penicillin’s, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams
2) Penicillin Adverse reactions
Allergies, anaphylaxis
Renal impairment
Hyperkalemia, dysrhythmias, hypernatremia
, ▪ 3) Cephalosporins Adverse reactions:
▪ Allergy, hypersensitivity, anaphylaxis, possible cross sensitivity
to penicillin
▪ Bleeding tendencies from cefotetan and ceftriaxone
▪ Thrombophlebitis with IV infusion
o Antibiotics Affecting the Bacterial Cell Wall: Identifying an Allergic
Reaction to Amoxicillin (Active Learning Template - Medication)
▪ 1) Allergies, anaphylaxis
▪ Interview clients for prior allergy
▪ Observe allergic reactions for 30 min following
parenteral administration of amoxicillin
▪ Immediate reactions occur btw 2-30 minutes after admin
▪ Accelerated reactions occur within 1-72 hours
▪ Delayed reactions occur within days to weeks
▪ 2) renal impairment
▪ Monitor kidney function
▪ Monitor I&O
▪ 3) hyperkalemia, dysrhythmias, hypernatremia
▪ Monitor cardiac status and electrolyte levels
o Antibiotics Affecting the Bacterial Cell Wall: Priority Finding to Report
to Provider (Active Learning Template - Medication)
▪ 1) a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillin, cephalosporins, etc.
▪ 2) use cautiously with clients who have or are at risk for kidney
dysfunction
▪ Pts who are acutely ill
▪ Older adults
▪ Young children
▪ 3) pts who are allergic to one penicillin are cross allergic to
other penicillin’s and are at risk for cross sensitivity to
cephalosporins
o Cardiac Glycosides and Heart Failure: Risk Factors for Digoxin Toxicity
