A Reflection Paper on Trauma
Introduction
After undergoing a traumatic experience, most people find it hard to live a normal life
because the incident stays on their minds which affects their psychological and emotional
wellbeing. The obstacles to familial and social incorporation are further worsened when such
individuals suffer from PTSD, traumatic brain damage, or other physical disorders such as
depression, grief responses, and compromised physical health. Such symptoms can hinder a
person’s capacity or willingness to express how they feel hence affecting their healing process
but prayers can be an integral part of counseling them (Corey, 2020). The film industry also has
been creating artistic films depicting traumatic experiences as an expressive tool to assist
traumatized individuals in to relate with their situations and one of the films is The Fisher King.
Produced by Terry Gilliam in 1991, The Fisher King is a representation of psychological
trauma that starts with a radio host called Jack encouraging his listeners to conduct a mass
shooting in an upscale restaurant. Jack, later on, loses his job which makes him a suicidal
alcoholic one day is randomly attacked at night but rescued by an extremely neurotic homeless
man called Parry (West, 2018). After jack learns that Parry is the way he is because of
witnessing his wife get murdered, he looks for redemption to help Parry find love and more
stable life. Parry's trauma is portrayed primarily via his hallucinations and thinks that he is on a
journey to find the Holy Grail and that Jack is a combatant who will assist him (West, 2018).
Parry envisions a Red Knight aiming to hinder this pursuit from being accomplished. He also
undergoes catatonia stretches rendering him unconscious. The clean resolution at the end might
take away from the originality of the traumatic situation, but the eclectic tone and the producer’s
beautifully awkward visuals assist in capturing the hallucinatory sensation.
