Ethical Considerations In Counselling

Introduction

Counselors usually undergo various circumstances that call for sound ethical decision-

making abilities. Establishing the right approach to apply in such situations might be a challenge

thus the American Counselling Association came up with a Practitioner’s Guide to Ethical

Decision Making as a model to maneuver through such dilemmas. Just like other professionals,

mental health providers have ethical duties and mandates. Kabir (2017) asserts that the primary

regulation supporting ethical responsibilities is that a counselor is required to act with full

acknowledgment of the significance of their client's rights and the ethics of the profession.

Counseling is not a value-free nor a neutral operation but a field found on values; orienting

notions concerning what is right and how it can be attained, and connection of moral standards

and values, personal or cultural, in the client’s life. Overall principles are naturally inspirational

and offer guidance and inspiration to counselors to the very highest ethical ideals in the field.

In the case study, a thirteen-year-old boy walks into a mental health center asking for

someone to talk to. Upon getting to a therapist, the client points out several individual and family

issues comprising serious bodily domestic violence. After reporting the issues, the client asks the

counselor not to disclose the information to anyone primarily his parents. The counselor shares

his alternatives with the client explaining that treatment cannot be commenced since he is under

eighteen years thus needs the consent of his parents. The counselor also states his duty of

reporting any cases of child maltreatment to the Child Protective Services, statements that make

the client feel betrayed. This review offers a comprehensive insight into counseling based on the

case study discussing the primary ethical principle, value systems, decision-making model,
